The Importance of “F*@! You” Money

It’s always important to have a little extra money saved up for emergencies or an emergency vacation. You never know when you’ll need to fix your car or have a relaxing weekend girls trip. If you aren’t rolling in dough, it might be difficult to finance these situations. Having a little rainy day fund could help.

Nearly half of all Americans live paycheck to paycheck, so saving can be difficult. But even putting $20 away a week would be a little over $1000 annually. For some, it might be more obtainable to just have a crisp $100 bill stashed in the sock drawer.

Beyond unexpected car repairs or a GNO, having “F*@! You” money might save lives. One of the most cited reasons for staying in abusive relationships is financial dependence. Getting a separate apartment, traveling to a safe location, or even just buying basic necessities might be very hard, if not impossible, for someone who is financially dependent on their abuser (not to mention if there are kids involved as well). The threat of legal action when you have no or limited income can be one of the most intimidating things. Many victims of abuse will stay with their abuser if they threaten to take away their kids or threaten to get sole custody.

Having some money saved up in a secret place like a tampon box could quite literally save lives and ease minds. It could give a victim of abuse the push they need to get out of their abusive situation.
